Registration and Residency in NZ

Registration and Residency in NZ Flowchart

A few points to note:
- NZ and AUS medical graduates are eligible to apply for the ACE match.
- IMGs have to apply to DHBs by themselves. There is no specific time period when you can apply.
- NZ citizens and residents are also eligible to apply for the ready to work programme in Auckland.

Do you have any points to add to this? Do let us know in the comments below!

  5. Once you pass the NZREX, you have to work under supervision for a minimum of 1 year. After that it depends on how quickly you can find a training spot. Can be a few months, a year or two. There really is no right answer to this question. It is said that getting an internship position for an IMG is the most difficult step, after that its less of a struggle.

  6. I just want to know, how are the employment rates after passing NZREX, do the PLAB/USMLE/AMC scores matter? Does previous medical experience, portfolio and etc part of the competition? and is there an interview process? I just want to calculate my chances.. thank you

    1. Hi F@rrel..Scores dont really matter. no where in the job applications do they ask you for scores, infact i am not sure if they even ask you which exams you took (usmle/plab/amc). the only place they could ask such things is during interviews (if any). Medical experience definitely counts. there could be an interview before you get hired. employment opportunities at present don't look too good unless you are a NZ citizen or permanent resident. there is a waiting period before you can secure a job, usually a few months, unless ofcourse your CV is too good :)
they also give a lot of importance to references. you need atleast 3 references to stand a decent chance. they get in touch with references directly.
Good luck, are you done with NZREX?

  8. I have cleared PLAB 1 and am looking forward to give NZREX in August, 2013. Although I was very excited about going to NZ, now I am sceptical about the same. An acquaintance, who is also an IMG, currently working in NZ, has informed me that it has become very difficult to get residency/internship in NZ after clearing NZREX not only due to saturation as well as because of a new measure they have adopted which makes only medical graduates from NZ/Australia eligible for the jobs opening in November. Please enlighten me about the same. Looking forward to the reply. Thanks in advance.

    1. The info your friend gave you is partly correct. IMGs are not eligible to take part in the ACE matching process. However, if there are any open positions after the ACE match, IMGs can apply. Its just that they cant apply through ACE directly. So hope that ACE doesnt fill up all the positions!
Yes, it is difficult to get a job currently, a lot of nzrex pass outs are still looking for jobs, some of them passed out last year.
Also, if any job positions become vacant during the year, IMGs can apply to them directly.
Good luck and hope this mesgs answers all your questions!

  9. Hey, what is the process of application and requirements for IMG/Foreign doctor with a speciality? Do NZ accepts specialities achieved outside of NZ?

    1. -There is a different process for specialists, as you would apply for provisional 'vocational' registration rather than provisional 'general' registration with mcnz.

-Yes, overseas postgraduate medical qualifications are accepted but there seemingly lengthy/complicated registration process involved. Your qualification will be assessed and compared to a similar qualification in Australia/NZ.

-Your PG training should be in a recognized vocational scope. Which means it should fit in one of the following categories:
      http://www.mcnz.org.nz/get-registered/scopes-of-practice/vocational-registration/types-of-vocational-scope/

-A few links that you may find helpful:

  10. Are the trainees /Interns(IMG) paid during their 1st year of training?

    1. Interns (1st year house officers) are paid. The payscale is pretty decent. Check out this page for more details on salaries: http://nzrexinfo.blogspot.com/2013/05/salaries-for-doctors-in-nz.html

  11. Hi,
I was wondering when one passes the NZREX clinical exam can they apply for an internship at anytime? Or do they have to wait until the internship round which starts in November in NZ?

    1. yes you can apply anytime (as long as there is a 1st year house officer vacancy).

  12. Hi GS,
Thank you for putting up the blog for us all. :)
I am an IMG and have yet to sit for NZREX. Im currently taking my step2 and have completed my step 1. Having read your previous posts, im not too sure if it would still be good for me to sit for the NZREX given that it is now harder for IMG's to find places in NZ. I am conflicted on whether I should proceed with NZREX or continue with residency in US instead. Your advice will be valuable. Thank you and have a great day ahead, Amirah (dr_mhirah@hotmail.com)
